things are gonna change, i can feel it
A summary of my feelings leading up to this movie: i thought the trailer looked totally cool! Cheesy and insane and pleasantly flashy and essentially everything a live-action anime should be. I don't really have much attachment to Speed Racer because i never really watched it as a kid, although i have always liked the Mach 5. In any case, i thought this looked funny and neat, and then... all the reviews coming in yesterday and today have been TERRIBLE. Like it's the worst movie ever. So that was getting me down and i was worried it would maybe be Transformers redux where i thought it would be fun and ended up being unbearably awful.

BUT NO! IT WAS, IN FACT, PRETTY GREAT. So i'm confused, because i usually do not enjoy supposedly awful movies i don't think. Like, did nobody get it? It was the most deliberate over-the-top cheesiness in the world, and i love that shit because it's SO INTENTIONAL. I'm not sure exactly how to distinguish that from Transformers, but i guess that wasn't deliberate enough for me, the "humor" in that was so lowest common denominator and not in the "gee gosh shucks!" endearing way that Speed Racer was. I GUESS??!!?? Basically i had wanted Transformers to be cheesy in a great, cartoony 80s way and it wasn't, it was cheesy in a product of the 2000s pop culture way and it made me feel bad. (BUSH JOKE! ROBOT PEEING! HA HA HA!) ANYWAY. I also love how so many bad reviews have also said "oh man bring a barf bag, i'm so dizzy, fast-moving things!" and that was suuuuuuuch a non-issue. But i don't get how anyone could have felt sick at Cloverfield either. MOTION PICTURE AUDIENCES: UR DOIN IT WRONG. I really just can't stand that something being jittery or fast-paced is an excuse that it's bad. The hyperactive camera moves were perfect. Suck it up. I will concede that it was slow in parts and could have had some talky scenes cut down, but otherwise i was extremely entertained the whole time and feel depressed that it's getting shit-talked all over the place. It was only a bad movie if you HATE FUN.

EMILE HIRSCH WHY SO PRETTY. I still have not seen Into the Wild because even seeing the previews for that made me sad, i'm scared to watch it. :(

SCOOOOOOOOOTT PORTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DITTO: WHY SO PRETTY?!? I was LOLing at him being a younger Matthew Fox because HA HA WHAT, NOT EVEN CLOSE, so i am glad that was easily explained. STREET! HE'S STREET RACER, HAHAHAHAHAHHA.

Ahem.

MATTHEW FOX I WISH YOUR FACE HAD BEEN IN MORE THAN THREE MINUTES OF THE MOVIE. Even so, aww, Racer X, so sad. Also Matthew Fox with slightly longer hair, i heart you so much. SHIRTLESS NINJA <3 <3 <3 But the best part was when he finally took off his mask for Speed, at the end of their conversation when he smiled and walked away. OH PRETTY SMILES TIMES. :D :D :D

I LOLed when that Togokhan guy (RAAAAAAAAAAIN!!! oh Colbert.) said "don't tell me what i can't do". YEAH, LAST NIGHT'S LOST WAS PRETTY FUCKED UP, I AGREE.

Trixie getting to race was A+ awesome. Also Trixie and Speed karate kicking together! :D And bantering! And kissing in front of the flashbulbs, yaaaaaaay.

BEST CRAZY AWESOME PARTS: the entiiiiiiiire intro with flashbacks and racing and flashbacks; the WHOLE rally race plus brawl in the middle (TEAMWORK!!); and the Grand Prix, especially the finale. So basically all the parts that were intended to be crazy awesome were crazy awesome. Shiny cars and bright colors!!!!

I have such a soft spot for things where a) familial love trumps all, and b) bright-eyed idealists save the day hardcore with their bright-eyed idealism, so there's another reason why i liked this so much. LOVE WINS, BITCHES.

I like how basically every movie where i think "hey this soundtrack is pretty cool!" when the credits roll it's by friggin Michael Giacchino. LIKE EVERY TIME. And i always feel a little bit proud because of Alias back in the day, hell yeah. That guy is pretty good at music, you know! :D

God this movie was totally on the good kind of psychadelic crack, it made me happy. So pretty. Dear fandom: i wouldn't hate you if you decided to ship Speed and Racer X. I MEAN, UH, WHAT? ...But he doesn't look like Rex anymore, it's okay. O_o ............................ I'll just be over here. Uh. Sitting.

I am now 2 for 2 loving summer movies. I WANT TO SEE IRON MAN AGAIN, OH TONY/PEPPER. Indy better not suck, man, that old guy is getting outpaced pretty quick here.

Hm, I skimmed to avoid spoilers, but huh! It seems to be getting pretty bad reviews, but it's 2 for 2 in Actual People Liking It.

I KNOOOOOW. I talked about that in the first two paragraphs of this post (which are non-spoilery!) I am totally being brought down by all the shitty reviews, when it was not bad at all but rather really really fun. I think every critic ever has a stick up their ass.

Yeah i had major issues with Transformers. MAJOR issues. In fact it still makes me kind of upset to think about because i examined my opinion for a loooong time trying to find a reason WHY. I was so looking forward to it, and then the robot stuff was cool, but... the rest of it. So many people loved it while i hated it that it left me questioning my place in the universe. OR SOMETHING!

Sorry. Tangent. SPEED RACER was way fun! :D

I haven't seen the movie yet but I knew, just as you did, what this movie was suppose to be. I think with all the kids movies lately being aimed towards adults as well, because "they have to sit through the movie too", it has totally clouded up critics' minds. I even saw a reviewer COMPLAIN about the family message being there. I'm thinking "Really? You want to go there?" There should without a doubt be a typical family message here considering the story, especially since they are in short supply these days.

This guy I converse with lots on movies but I don't necessarily 'know' said more on the matter:
"I’ve been surprised by some of the sniffy reviews for the Wachowski brothers’ latest which have taken it to task for not having much depth. It’s a kid’s movie for Christ’s sake, and a terrific one at that. It’s about cars that go very very fast. It’s colourful and energetic and dazzling and exciting. For me, part of what didn’t work for me with the two Matrix sequels was that the special effects technology didn’t exist then to fully realize the Wachowskis’ seemingly limitless imagination and so parts of Reloaded looked too much like a video-game. Here, it’s meant to look like a cartoon. For little kids it might be a little long, and the whole corporate shenanigans will go over most of their heads. But for a big kid like me, it was terrific fun. As I said before, I can't wait to see it again."

I'm gonna try to get out tomorrow (Saturday) to see Speed Racer. I can't let it turn into another Iron Man... I still have to see that as well. !#$%@%^@

HAHAHAHA WHAT. Yeah seriously get that shit out of our movies. >_<

I'm so glad there are other people out there who GOT it. I mean i can understand how it's not for everyone, it's very frenetic and very very silly, and some of the talkyness runs sort of long as to be a LITTLE boring, but saying the whole movie is boring is just... what? CARS DRIVING FAST AND PROVIDING LOTS OF ACTION! Total cartoony ridiculousness! If anything i love that they really went ALL THE WAY with how over-the-top it was, and i guess that's maybe also why it's getting such extreme backlash, because if you don't like that sort of thing then you REALLY won't like this. It sure has gotten annoying that all the snippets of reviews i've seen are like "those colors are too darn bright! that moved too fast! ow, i have a headache!" IS EVERY REVIEWER EIGHTY YEARS OLD?!? Childish fun sure does suck! :/

SEE IRON MAN AND SPEED RACER NOW. I already want to see both of them again. <3

Total cartoony ridiculousness!
YESSUM. :D

Exactly. It won't be for everyone. Most movies are like that really - most recently, probably Sweeney Todd. And see that's where critics messed up with Speed Racer; they respected Sweeney for what it was even if didn't personally enjoy it, though most did. A friend of mine didn't end up enjoying SR, but he didn't think it was awful or anything, he respected it for what it was. It's like me with No Country for Old Men. I very much respect the movie, but I didn't personally enjoy it. Which sucks because I expected to and PURCHASED IT. Oy.

IS EVERY REVIEWER EIGHTY YEARS OLD?!?
HAHAHA. Apparently!

I'm trying to pull off a double feature today/tonight. Fingers crossed! XD

so basically when i saw the previews for this movie the only reason i would go to see it was because of emile hirsch and matthew fox..for obvious reasons. but after reading your review, it sounds like something i would enjoy and i kind of want to see it now.
you have a way of doing that with things you really love. and its great.
